Publication date: January 1996
Brent's note: Dr. Quinsey , Professor, Department of Psychology atQueen's University, is one of the premier sex offender researchers in the field today. He has a litany of articles published on the subject a mile long. I've referenced him many times in my own work.
I've followed his work for a while now (5-6years-- but he's been much longer than that), and although I do not always agree with his biological approach (penile plethysmagraph) I find his assertions well founded in good longituinal research and subsequently very compelling.

Conversations With a Pedophile: In the Interest of our Children (Amazon)
by Amy Hammel-Zabin
Hardcover Published by Barricade Books
Publication date: April 2003
Book Description, Conversations With a Pedophile is a landmark book. It is the
first time the uncensored voice of a pedophile will be heard.
Amy Hammel-Zabin met the man called "Alan" while working as a music therapist in the prison where he was
incarcerated. She was the first therapist to whom he would actually respond. "Alan" opened up to her,
confessing that he had sexually abused hundreds.
Though he will spend the rest of his life in prison, Alan with Dr. Hammel-Zabin's help, decided he wanted to
make constructive amends. This book contains a series of letters to the author in which "Alan" explains how
the mind of a pedophile works. In an effort to help parents protect their children from predators such as
himself, Alan carefully describes how he selected and preyed on his victims. He fortifies the reader on the
ways to spot early warning alarms. He proves that the danger of pedophilia does not come from the stranger
in the street offering gifts of candy. It's the nice boy next door, the distant relative, the sweet baby-sitter.
It is also shown that our churches aren't safe havens. Nor are our schools or our Scout troops.
Throughout the book, Dr. Hammel-Zabin offers her expert analysis on "Alan's" letters. She is uniquely qualified
because she is both a trained therapist and a victim of sexual abuse herself. Throughout, Zabin compares the
motivation and perseverance of the abuser "Alan," with her story: that of the abused.
Nothing like this has ever appeared in print before. It is a book of tremendous value to all parents and child caregivers.

Unspeakable
Acts : Why Men Sexually Abuse Children (Amazon)
by Douglas W. Pryor
Hardcover, 351 pages
Published by New York Univ Pr
Publication date: August 1,1996
The publisher, New York University Press, 11/15/96: Vital reading about the question WHY men commit sexual abuse
"A superb book that takes us into the subjective world of the 'child molester.' It breaks new ground and provides a major contribution to sex research. Vital reading for all those interested in the interpretation of the men who commit 'unspeakable acts." - Martin S. Weinberg co-author of 'Dual Attraction: Understanding Bisexuality'
"Victims, survivors, and their supporters most want to know how and why people can sexually assault and terrorize children who love and trust them. Finally, after reading Doug Pryor's 'Unspeakable Acts', I feel I have a vivid and reliable answer to that question. This book is must reading for every student of child sexual abuse." - Hal Pepinsky Indiana University at Bloomington
The sexual abuse of children is one of the most unsettling and emotionally inflammatory issues in American society today. It has been estimated that roughly one out of every four girls and one in ten boys experience some form of unwanted sexual attention either inside or outside the family before they reach adulthood. How should society deal with the sexual victimization of children? Should known offenders be released back into our communities? If so, where, and with what rights, should they be allowed to live? In 'Unspeakable Acts', Douglas W. Pryor argues that mjch of this debate, designed to deal with abusers AFTER they have offended, ignores the important issues of WHY men cross these forbidden sexual boundaries to molest children in the first place and how the behavior can possibly be prevented before it starts. Incorporating in-depth interviews with more than thirty convicted child molesters, Pryor explores how men become involved with breaking sexual boundaries with children. He looks at how their lives prior to offending contributed to and led up to what they did, the ways that initial interest in sex with children began, the tactics offenders employed to molest their victims over time, how they felt about and reacted to their behavior between offending episodes, and how they were ultimately able to stop. The author expands our understanding of this often reviled, little understood group, leaving us with the uneasy conclusion that the moral wall separating us from what is defined as extreme, 'sick' behavior is not as opaque as we would like to believe.
Douglas W. Pryor is co-author of the recent ground-breaking book "Dual Attractions: Understanding Bisexuality" and Assistant Professor of Sociology at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.
